The Five Behaviors Re-Engages Teams
There are numerous factors that impact team success. Such as making sure they have direction, alignment, and commitment. Then there’s skill abilities, i.e., do all of the players have the skills they need to complete the task? And I’m not just referring to technical skills, but also interpersonal skills. Plus, do they have the resources to be successful, right?
In a 2016 HBR article titled, “The Secrets of Great Teamwork,” the authors refer to what has changed since Hackman, a pioneer in organizational behavior, identified some of the above factors I just listed as effecting team success. They still believe a relatively small number of factors have an outsized impact on team success today. So how do you create a climate that helps diverse, dispersed, digital, dynamic teams—a 4-D team—attain high performance?
Whether you have a new team or have been working together for a while, The Five Behaviors™ assessment, facilitated by an authorized partner, can (re-)engage your team to embrace a shared ownership in reaching desired results and keep a 4-D team on track.
The Five Behaviors Re-Engages Teams and Solves Workplace Dysfunction
The Five Behaviors® is the result of the partnership between Wiley Workplace Learning Solutions and best-selling author Patrick Lencioni. Their mission is to deliver a premiere learning solution that improves team effectiveness and productivity through the understanding and application of The Five Behaviors: Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability, and Results. This unique learning experience helps build a culture of high-performing teams through better communication and collaboration.
Trust
Trust is the first of The Five Behaviors®—without it, there can be no growth or transformation. It’s challenging to navigate without it, and critical for everyone on the team. When team members are genuinely and honestly transparent with one another, it forms a safe environment that creates and builds vulnerability-based trust.
Conflict
Next, we’re tackling Conflict. And while the idea of this might trigger your fight or flight response, it certainly doesn’t have to. Conflict can (and should) be a healthy, regular part of the workplace—without it, your team cannot truly progress. With trust as a team’s foundation, team members are able to engage in unfiltered, constructive debate of ideas.
Commitment
You can call commitment a few things, like buy-in or dedication, but it all really boils down to you and your team agreeing on and committing to the same goals, expectations, and purposes. Once you have the Trust and Conflict under your belt, this next behavior can open up so many doors for your team. When team members are feel safe to offer opinions and debate ideas, they feel heard and respected, and will be more likely to commit to decisions.
Accountability
Accountability—while a buzzword—is a vital component of any high-functioning team. Keeping yourself and others accountable ensures staying on track to hit goals and metrics, but it also keeps the principles of Trust, Conflict, and Commitment alive. It takes work to get there, but your teammates will thank you for it. Once everyone is committed to a clear plan of action, they will be more willing to hold one another accountable, instead of going to their leader to do so.
Results
One of the greatest challenges to team success is the inattention to results. When you’re on a functional, cohesive team, everyone should value collective success more than individual achievement. Sound impossible? It’s not when you’re this far up the Five Behaviors pyramid! The ultimate goal is achievement of results, unlocked through implementing the models’ principals of Trust, Conflict, Commitment, and Accountability.
